If you visit the Vuelta Abajo village
of San Juan y Marrtinez today, you will find a plantation gate inscribed "Hoyo
de Monterrey. Jose Gener. 1860".
The
hoyo de monterrey (loosely translated "Monterrey valley") premium
cigar brand was originally produced by Jose Gener Sr, a leaf grower in the fertile
lands of the Vuelta Abajo who was to later found one of the greatest Cuban cigar
factories on the island. Production of today's great hoyo de monterrey
brand actually began in 1960 and the "Le Hoyo" series was added to the
commercial cigar market in the mid-seventies.
Renowned
among cigar aficionados for its distinctive flavour, silky richness and complexity
of taste, the hoyo de Monterrey Double Corona is perhaps the most sought
after and coveted Cuban cigar made. True witness to the fact (as some say) that
"gold" really does grow from the ground! A premium cigar produced in
seven factories, Hoyo vitoles and the magnificent Hoyo Double Corona are made
with only the finest Cuban tobacco.
